Only the formats your browser can actually write are offered. A conversion that would silently fall back to PNG is refused rather than mislabelled.
The saving shown is measured from the file that came out, never estimated. A file that would get bigger is reported as such and the original is offered instead.
Give one dimension and the other follows from the aspect ratio. Downscaling is done in halving steps, which is what keeps fine detail from breaking up.
Crop works on one image at a time. Drag inside the picture to move the selection, drag a corner to resize it, or nudge it with the arrow keys.
Rotation and flipping apply to every image in the queue. A quarter turn swaps the width and the height, which is what the preview shows.
The size is a share of the image width, so one setting suits a whole batch of differently sized pictures. A watermark marks ownership; it does not protect a file, and anyone determined can remove it.
The segmentation model runs on your own device. About 6 MB of runtime and weights are downloaded the first time you use this panel, from this site, and your photograph is never sent anywhere.
This is a saliency model, not a matting model: it finds the subject well and cuts a firm edge. Hair, fur and motion blur come out harder than a specialist tool would manage.
JPEG and PNG metadata is removed without re-encoding the picture, so the pixels that come out are identical to the ones that went in. Other formats have to be re-encoded, and the result says so.

Every operation here runs on a canvas in this tab. No image is ever sent to a server - which is also why it works offline once loaded. The one thing that is downloaded is the background-removal model, from this site, the first time you open that panel. Every saving reported is measured from the file that came out.
FAQ
Are my images uploaded?
No. Everything happens in this tab: the files are decoded, redrawn on a canvas and re-encoded on your own machine. No image is sent to a server, and nothing about your files is written to storage. The only network request the toolkit can make is for the background-removal model, served from this site.
Which formats can it write?
Whichever ones your browser can encode, checked for real rather than assumed. PNG and JPEG everywhere; WebP in every current browser; AVIF where the browser supports writing it, which today means Chrome and Firefox but not Safari. A format your browser cannot write is not offered, because a canvas silently produces PNG in that case and you would end up with a bigger file wearing the wrong name.
How does background removal work without a server?
A segmentation model (U^2-Net, the small 4.4 MB variant) runs in WebAssembly on your device, through ONNX Runtime Web. Both are served from this site, and both are downloaded only when you open that panel - about 6 MB compressed the first time, then cached by the browser. It is a saliency model rather than a matting model, so it cuts a firm edge and does not do justice to hair or fur.
Does removing metadata damage the image?
Not for JPEG or PNG. The metadata segments are removed from the container and the compressed image data is copied through untouched, so the pixels are bit-identical to the original. Other formats have to be re-encoded to strip their metadata, and the result says so on the row rather than leaving you to notice.
Why did my file get bigger after compressing?
Usually because it was already well compressed, or because a photograph was converted to PNG, which is lossless and therefore large for photographic content. The toolkit checks: when the output is not smaller it says so plainly and hands back the original file instead of the larger one.
How large an image can it handle?
Up to 25 MB per file, 30 files at a time, and 40 megapixels per image - roughly a 50-megapixel camera. Those ceilings exist because decoding one image of that size already costs a few hundred megabytes of memory, and going past them kills the tab rather than reporting an error. Anything too large is refused with its actual size.
