FAQ
How is WPM calculated?
A word is five characters, including the space after it. That is the definition behind every WPM figure since typewriter tests in the 1960s, and it exists because real words differ in length while five-character words do not. Gross WPM is every character you typed divided by five, per minute. Net WPM, the number this tool leads with, subtracts one word for each error still uncorrected at the end, per minute.
Why is my net WPM lower than my gross WPM?
Because something was still wrong when the run ended. Net WPM is gross WPM minus one word per uncorrected error per minute, which is what stops typing fast nonsense from scoring well. If you fix a mistake as you go it costs you time, and the time is already in the figure; it does not cost you a second penalty.
How is accuracy different from errors?
Accuracy is counted as you type: every keypress that matched the text over every keypress you made. Fixing a mistake does not undo it, so a corrected error still lowers accuracy. Errors left is the other number, and it counts only what was still wrong when the clock stopped. Together they say whether you type cleanly or type fast and repair.
What does consistency mean?
How steady your speed was, as 100 minus the coefficient of variation of your per-second speeds. It says nothing about being fast: a run that holds 40 WPM the whole way scores higher than one that alternates 90 and 30, even though the second one is faster on average. It is the number that improves when your typing stops depending on which words came up.
Are my keystrokes recorded or sent anywhere?
No. The test reads keystrokes from its own field and nothing else, so nothing you type outside it is visible to this page at all, and there is no API call behind the page for anything to be sent to. Only your finished scores are kept, in this browser, and the Clear button removes them.
Why are the words in my language different from the English ones?
Because a Polish test that never asks for ą, ć or ż measures a different skill from the one you came to measure, and the same is true of German ä, ö, ü and ß, and of every accented letter in French, Spanish and Italian. Each language has its own list of common words, drawn at random each run so no two runs are the same text.
