Words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and lines, updated as you type. Reading and speaking times come from a stated rate - 200 and 130 words a minute by default - which you can change to your own.

Words are counted using the browser's own Unicode segmentation, so contractions like "don't" count as one, hyphenated compounds like "state-of-the-art" are re-joined into one the way a word processor does, and languages written without spaces are segmented properly rather than counted as a single enormous word.

Your text stays in this tab. There is no API behind this page, nothing is stored, and the route carries no analytics or error-reporting scripts - which is the point, because the things people paste into a word counter are drafts, contracts and cover letters.
