What WPM actually counts
A word is five characters, including the space after it. That definition is what makes two WPM figures comparable at all, since real words differ in length and five-character words do not, and it has been the standard since typewriter tests in the 1960s.
Gross WPM is everything you typed divided by five, per minute. Net WPM, the number this page leads with, subtracts one word for each error still uncorrected when the clock stops. That is what stops fast nonsense from scoring well, and it is the figure people mean when they quote a speed.
Thirty seconds is long enough to be a measurement and short enough to repeat, which is why it is the usual length. The clock starts on your first keystroke rather than when the page loads, so reading the words costs you nothing, and the keystrokes are read from one field and never sent anywhere.
