Which symbology do I need?
EAN-13
Retail products sold anywhere outside North America. Thirteen digits, the first two or three of which say which country issued the number.
EAN-8
The short retail code, for packets too small to carry a full EAN-13. Eight digits, issued rather than derived.
UPC-A
Retail products in the United States and Canada. Twelve digits, and the same bars as an EAN-13 that starts with a zero.
Code 128
Anything internal: order numbers, asset tags, serial numbers. Any printable character, and the densest of these for a long value.
Code 39
The old industrial standard. Capitals, digits and a few symbols, readable by almost any scanner ever made, and wider than Code 128 for the same value.
ITF-14
The code on a shipping carton, describing the boxes inside it rather than one product. Fourteen digits, and it needs a thick border around it in print.

The barcode is drawn in this tab. The value you type is never sent anywhere, which matters more than it sounds: a product code, a serial number or an internal reference is somebody's business data.

How it works

Why Code 128 for internal codes

Code 128 carries the whole printable ASCII range, so it takes an order number, a location, a serial or anything else your own system uses. Nobody has to issue you the value: unlike a retail barcode, an internal code means whatever you decide it means.

It is also the densest of the linear symbologies for a mixed value, because it has a mode that packs two digits into one symbol. This tool switches into that mode wherever the value allows it and back out again for the letters, which is why a run of digits takes barely more than half the width of the same number of letters.

Every symbol carries a modulo-103 checksum, so a misread is caught rather than returned as a different value. The encoding and the drawing both happen in this tab: an order number or a serial is business data, and it never leaves the browser.
