Which symbology do I need?
EAN-13
Retail products sold anywhere outside North America. Thirteen digits, the first two or three of which say which country issued the number.
EAN-8
The short retail code, for packets too small to carry a full EAN-13. Eight digits, issued rather than derived.
UPC-A
Retail products in the United States and Canada. Twelve digits, and the same bars as an EAN-13 that starts with a zero.
Code 128
Anything internal: order numbers, asset tags, serial numbers. Any printable character, and the densest of these for a long value.
Code 39
The old industrial standard. Capitals, digits and a few symbols, readable by almost any scanner ever made, and wider than Code 128 for the same value.
ITF-14
The code on a shipping carton, describing the boxes inside it rather than one product. Fourteen digits, and it needs a thick border around it in print.

The barcode is drawn in this tab. The value you type is never sent anywhere, which matters more than it sounds: a product code, a serial number or an internal reference is somebody's business data.

How it works

What the thirteen digits are

An EAN-13 is a GS1 number: the first two or three digits say which member organisation issued it, the middle digits identify your company and your product, and the last one is a check digit computed from the other twelve. Type those twelve and it appears; paste all thirteen and the one you gave is verified rather than replaced.

Only twelve digits are drawn as bars. The thirteenth is carried in the PARITY of the left-hand six, which is why a thirteen digit code fits in the same 95 modules as a twelve digit one, and why the leading digit is printed outside the symbol rather than under it.

The white margin either side is the quiet zone and it is part of the specification: a scanner uses it to find where the symbol starts. It is inside the SVG here, which is why the image is wider than the bars. The tool draws the symbol but does not issue the number: a code that will be scanned in shops needs a GTIN allocated to you by GS1.
