Every conversion is calculated in this tab. Nothing is sent anywhere, which is also why the result appears as you type rather than after a round trip to a server.
Decimal and binary prefixes
MB and GB here are decimal: 1 GB is 1000 MB and 1 MB is one million bytes. That is what the SI prefixes mean, and it is what drive manufacturers, network operators and most current operating systems use.
MiB and GiB are the binary units: 1 GiB is 1024 MiB, or 1073741824 bytes. They are listed as separate units rather than mixed in, which is why a 500 GB drive turns up as roughly 465 GiB in a file manager that counts in binary and still writes GB.
Bits are eight to the byte, so a 100 Mbit/s line moves about 12.5 MB per second before any overhead. Transfer rates are their own category on this page for exactly that reason, and the conversion runs in this tab.
