How this works
The segmentation model runs on your device. About 6 MB of WebAssembly runtime and model weights are downloaded the first time you open this panel - from this site, not from a third party - and cached by the browser afterwards. Your photograph never becomes a network request, which is a property of the code rather than a promise in a policy.
The model is U-2-Net in its small variant: it finds the salient subject of a photograph and produces a mask. That mask is scaled up to the full image and used to cut the subject out, either onto transparency or onto a colour you pick. The before-and-after slider shows the result over a transparency checkerboard, so "the background is gone" is something you can see.
It is a saliency model, not a matting model. It finds subjects well and cuts a firm edge; hair, fur and motion blur come out harder than a specialist tool would manage. When the mask covers almost none or almost all of the frame the tool says so, rather than presenting an empty cut-out as a success.
