Metadata

JPEG and PNG metadata is removed without re-encoding the picture, so the pixels that come out are identical to the ones that went in. Other formats have to be re-encoded, and the result says so.

How it works

How this works

A photograph from a phone routinely carries the camera model, the exact time it was taken, the software that touched it and - the one that matters - the coordinates where it was taken, accurate to a few metres. This panel reads those tags and shows them, with GPS called out first, before anything is removed.

Removal is lossless for JPEG and PNG. The metadata segments are cut out of the container and the compressed image data is copied through byte for byte, so the picture that comes out decodes to exactly the same pixels as the one that went in. No re-encoding, no quality loss, no change in how it looks.

Other formats have to be re-encoded to strip their metadata, and the result says so on the row rather than leaving you to discover it. Nothing here is uploaded, and that includes the coordinates: they are read, displayed and discarded on this device.
