One square image goes in and the set a modern site actually needs comes out: favicon.ico containing the 16, 32 and 48 pixel sizes Windows reads, the same three as separate PNGs, a 180 pixel apple-touch-icon, 192 and 512 pixel icons for a web manifest, the manifest itself and the four lines of HTML that reference them. It downloads as one ZIP.
The set is deliberately short. Icon generators used to emit forty files - a browserconfig.xml, a dozen Windows tile sizes, six Android sizes - and almost none of it is read by anything today. Shipping files nobody uses is padding, not thoroughness.
Transparency is preserved by default; choose a colour if the icon needs a solid background. Every size is produced by cropping to a square and scaling down in halving steps, so a 16 pixel icon stays legible instead of turning to mush.
