Percentage calculator

The three questions people actually mean by "percentage": what is X% of Y, X is what percent of Y, and how much did a value change.

What this calculator does and does not do

Exact decimal arithmetic, in your browser

Every money figure is computed in exact decimal arithmetic rather than floating point, and rounded once, at the end - so a VAT line and an amortization schedule add up the way an invoice does. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. None of this is financial or tax advice: the formulas are standard and the inputs are yours.

FAQ

Are these calculations exact?

For money, yes. Every currency figure is computed in scaled integer arithmetic rather than floating point, which is why the amortization schedule closes at exactly zero and a 23% VAT line lands where an invoice puts it. The one exception is solving for time in a savings goal, which needs a logarithm: that produces a whole number of periods, and the balance at that point is then recomputed exactly.

What is the difference between margin and markup?

The denominator. Margin is profit divided by the selling price; markup is profit divided by the cost. Buy at 100 and sell at 150 and you have a 50% markup and a 33.33% margin - the same trade, two different numbers. Both are shown together here so they cannot be mistaken for each other.

Which currency do these use?

None, unless you pick one. The arithmetic is currency-agnostic and nothing here converts between currencies; the selector at the top only changes how the numbers are formatted. Enter amounts in whatever currency you are working in and the results are in the same one.

Is the VAT calculator specific to one country?

No. The rate is a field, and the presets are common European rates offered as shortcuts, not as a claim about what applies to you. Rates, exemptions, reduced categories and reverse charge rules differ by country and by what is being sold, so this is arithmetic rather than tax advice.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The calculators run entirely in your browser, and nothing you type reaches a server. The only thing stored is your choice of currency formatting, kept in this browser so the page opens the way you left it.

Why does the loan schedule's last payment differ?

Because a payment rounded to the cent cannot divide a balance exactly, so a few cents accumulate over the term. The schedule here carries full precision internally and lets the final payment absorb the remainder, which is what a lender does - and it is why the balance column ends at zero rather than a few cents either way.
