Work hours

Hours worked between two times, including shifts that cross midnight. Opens in the Date & Time Toolkit, which handles breaks and decimal hours.

How it works

How this is calculated

Type the start and end of a shift as clock times (9:00 or 09:00), the unpaid break in minutes and how many days a week you work. The result is the time worked per shift, in hours and in minutes, and the weekly, monthly and yearly hours that follow from it.

A shift that ends before it starts, 22:00 to 06:00, is read as crossing midnight rather than rejected, because that is what a night shift looks like. The break is taken off the whole shift; a break longer than the shift is an error.

Monthly hours are the weekly hours times 52 divided by 12, the convention most payroll systems use. For the gap between two dates rather than two times, the date difference calculator in the Date & Time toolkit is the right tool.
